Stop Your Dog From Jumping to All Over You

1. Understand Why Your Dog Jumps onto You
2. Give the Appropriate Signal to Your Dog
3. Don’t be Angry or Shout to your Dog
4. Consistency is the King

Understand Why Your Dog Jump to You

Are you ever embarrassed by your dog jumping all over onto your friends? Getting their clothes all dirty? If you, please read ahead because there is hope and this behavior is totally correctable.

A lot of the problems with Dog Training are caused from the fact dogs and humans are two totally different animals. We, as humans don't necessarily understand why dogs do various things. Jumping is one of them. When dogs jump on you, it usually either means they want to seek attention or they are showing their dominance to you.

You may think that the dog is excited when jumping onto you once you come home. In fact, this is a widely misunderstood behavior by many dog owners. When a dog jumps onto you, it means he/she is asserting their dominance over you. This is because your dog perceives you as one of his type and in the canines' world, a dog asserts their domainance by leaping up onto the other dogs.

How to Stop the Jumping?

Give the Appropriate Signal to Your Dog

When your dog jump onto you, the best signal that you can give to him is ignoring him. Avoid eye contact with him, look away. He may keep jumping for 20 seconds, but don’t give him any attention until all four paws are on the ground. Now, it is the time to give positive attention. Give a treat or pat him lavishly. By doing this continuously, you are conveying the message that jumping on you is not a rewarding thing to do. On the other hand, staying on the group is. Keep doing this exercise and your dog will get your message really soon.

Don’t be Angry or Shout at your Dog

Remember when your dog jumps on you, they are seeking attention. Negative attention such as shouting, is also a sourced of attention to your dog. If you shout at your dog, it is giving him attention and is a way of conditioning him to jump. So, try to keep calm and don’t be angry. Ignoring your dog is the most effective conditioning.

Consistency is the King

Like any other behavioral dog training, application of consistent reaction is really important here. You cannot be angry with him when he is jumping onto your work clothes while giving praise when jumping on you when you are in an exercising outfit. Your dog will be confused because you are giving mixed message and responses to him.
