What is Alpha Dog?

In the animal world, alpha dog is used to described the leader of the pack. Alpha dog has the highest "social status" in the pack, and is usually respected by the rest of the pack. The alpha dog is usually physically stronger in the group. The instinct to become the alpha dog is engineered in the genes of each dog - it is just natural for your dog to want to become the alpha dog.

Obviously, as a dog owner, you don't want alpha dog behaviour to happen to your dog. It is important that you let your dog knows you will be the alpha dog right from the beginning of your relationship. Furthermore, make sure the rest of your family are aware of this concept when dealing with your dog. Because of the dog's natural instinct, it is likely that your dog will try to raise his place in the ranking system, to become the alpha dog. As such, you must enforce yourselves as being the superior in the pack, or in your dog's eyes, the "Alpha Dog"

There are varous things that you have to pay attention to when dealing with alpha dog behaviour. To make your life easier, we have summarized them to the tips below:

Pay Attention to the Adolescent Period

When dogs reach about 5 to 6 months old, most dogs will start to go through a period called adolescent period. During this period, their bodies will produce hormones that will enhance the chance for them to become the alpha dog. Make sure you notice this and surpress an undersirable alpha dog behavior from the beginning.

You get to Eat First

Again, bearing the mind of yourselves being the alpha dog. You, and your family should enjoy your meal first, then feed the dog. This reinforces you and your family as ranking higher than your dog, thus, suppressing his alpha dog behavior.

Greeting to you, Not greeting to the dog

For most dog owners, it would be easy to just greet your dog right at the door. Instead, you should make sure you greet all your family members in the household first. Then, call the dog to you. Remember, being the alpha dog, you need to let your dog know that you have superior status, and he should come to you, instead of the other way around.

Let Your Dog know who is the Boss

During certain time of the day, your dog may want to go outside or he knows that it is time to go for a walk. Don't be forced to go out immediately, make him wait and let him go back to his kennel for 15 minutes or so. Remember you are taking him to a walk , not being forced to go for a walk. It is important that you initiate the walk.
